A Sri Lankan inventor, Lanka Inventions Chairman Thahir (Milhan) Mohamed has designed a tyre that does not inflate on air for motor vehicles, a first in the world.
Speaking to Daily News Business, Thahir said that instead of air, a special variety of solid material is being used to produce this tyre."This bio-degradable material is made similar to a jelly and is being inserted to the tyre instead of air."
This ensures that the tyre will be able to bear the shocks on the road similar to air. "This jelly does the work of air and has the same characters and functions of air. (Force, Pressure, Density and Mass.)
Thahir said the unique feature of this tyre is that it will never ever have a puncture and does not have to be checked for air pressure. "When the upper rubber layer is worn out the jelly will act as the rubber tyre layer allowing the tyre to be used for around another 100 kilometers."
He said that the second stage of the 'airless tyre' will be to completely replace the upper rubber tyre layer and make it from 100% special bio-degradable material. (jelly)
Thahir said he presented this formula to the Industry and Commerce Ministry and they are every keen to promote it internationally. "In addition I have also made presentations of this tyre to three professionals in the field who had recommended it for commercial production."
He said that he intends to get a global patent for this and subsequently market it to a global tyre manufacturer.
"By introducing technological innovation and revolutionary methods my vision is to contribute in the field of technological development in the developed countries at the international level bringing technical standards of Sri Lanka before the eyes of the international community."
To meet this end I have also developed a my own website,
This is not the first invention by Thahir. He designed the world's first reading glasses with a focusing ring."This is made for people with poor and impaired eye sight."The product is very easy for handling. "When you turn the glass mover wheel lenses and glasses on both sides of your eye glass shall move back and forth. When this lens moves forward large objects can be seen smaller and when you move backward small objects can be seen bigger. This can be adjusted to suit the eyesight of a person."
A person at a distance can read boards and name boards of shops well.It means that we can move it till we can see it clearly. He said that he has also designed a shoe where a person could walk on water and several other security devices.
Thahir has been following his higher studies in the field of invention of the Java Institute of Advanced Technology. His efforts were also honoured at the ninth World Tamil and Islamic literary conference recently by Trade and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen.
