Sri Lanka’s First Public Health Museum Opens at NIHS Kalutara to Mark Centenary
Sri Lanka has officially opened its first Public Health Museum at the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) in Kalutara, marking a major milestone as the institute celebrates 100 years of service in developing the nation's healthcare workforce.
The inauguration took place under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Health and Mass Media, alongside Dr. Rajesh Sambhajirao Pandav, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Sri Lanka.
Key Highlights of the Exhibition
* Historical Artifacts: Features rare public health records, historical photographs, vintage uniforms, badges, and healthcare tools dating back to the early 1900s.
* Sector-Wide Milestones: Special displays showcase key health programs, strategic partnerships, and systemic achievements that transformed public healthcare outcomes over the past century.
* WHO 20th Anniversary Stamp: Highlights a commemorative WHO stamp (1948–1968), illustrating over two decades of international cooperation during the foundation of Sri Lanka's modern healthcare framework.
Beyond preserving historic artifacts, the museum serves as an educational hub tracking the evolution of national healthcare systems and honoring the frontline pioneers who built Sri Lanka's public health foundation. The museum is now open to the public at the NIHS campus in Kalutara.
