Medical students to protest against SAITM
By Umesh Moramudali
RepublishedMedical Faculties Students' Action Committee (MFSAC) is to organize a mass protest early next month demanding the government to abolish the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).
MFSAC Convener Ryan Jayalath told Ceylon Today that several trade unions had also agreed to support the struggle in ensuring the quality of medical education in the country.
"We started a Satyagraha demanding the government to abolish SAITM. It will complete 100 days by the end of this month. After that we will have a massive rally and a protest march from Galle to Colombo," Jayalath said.
He noted that there has been no response from any responsible parties from the government and added that opportunities were not given to even discuss the matter. He also blamed the government for not paying attention to the matter.
"We will continue our struggle to ensure free education. Education is a right, not a commodity. The government cannot ignore its duty to ensure free education," he added further.
