Peradeniya Science Undergraduates clash: Five injured

By Cyril Wimalasurendra
A clash between two groups of science undergraduates of the University of Peradeniya yesterday ended with five of them being injured.
The two groups attacked each other with cricket bats, stones and other missiles.
The area outside the buildings of the science faculty turned into battle field as large crowds of undergraduates exchanged abuse and missiles.
The five undergaruduates who sustained injuries were admitted to the medical centre of the university, university sources said.
The clash was during a clean-up campaign carried out in the science faculty premises against the spread of dengue.
Vice-Chancellar of the University Professor Upul B. Dissanayake told media in the afternoon that acording to information he had received the clash was due to engaging of a group of inmates of the prison in the clean up campaign.
A group of undergraduates raised objections to bringing down prison inmates to the campus for the clean up campaign while the other group supported the move, sources said.
Professor said, "It is a pity that the clash was between two groups of undergarduates who are believed to be an educated, intelligent young people learning in the highest seat of education of the country and this is really shameful."
